Abstract

Urban green corridors are a nature-based solution (SBN) that provides with recreation areas and an urban connectivity network for mobility. It also provides with ecosystem services to city residents, improving their quality of life, being a strong management tool for the development of sustainable cities. Our work proposes a methodology as a basis for the design of urban green corridors, through a practical case in an intermediate-sized city, such as Temuco (Chile). The methodology is based on the selection of small and medium-sized urban green areas that, together with networks of cycle paths and pedestrian streets, connect the core green areas of the city, understanding these as green areas of high vegetation density and diversity. The results show the applicability of the criteria used for the methodological proposal for the design of green corridors, along with evidencing the positive conditions of Temuco in quality and surface of green areas, cycle paths and pedestrian streets promoting clean urban mobility. Furthermore, the method is replicable in other cities and permits the incorporation of new parameters that will help provide greater benefits from the green corridor.
