Abstract
This article is a translation of a text by the Usina, from Brazil, which has been providing technical assistance to social movements and organized communities for more than thirty years. The objective is problematizing the architectural project in contexts of self-managed habitat production. The text is based on the systematization, analysis and reflection of Usina's experiences to different social movements in their processes of struggle for housing and the city. It is organized in sections that cover different theoretical and methodological aspects of the collective's practice. Throughout the article, interesting elements are discussed in order to think about how to approach creative potential, ways of life and family relationships, technical issues and technological definitions, urban scale and the right to the city. This work is an important contribution to university education in architecture and urban planning, since it provides elements that allow us to learn about specific procedures and make our view of participation in urban-architectural projects more profound. Fundamentally, when such processes seek the political emancipation and the reinforcement the autonomy, for the construction of new social relations, alternatives to the current capitalist city. Processes where self-management not only involves decision-making in project design, but is also a constituent part of the planning and execution of the city's production processes.
