Abstract
This article proposes and applies a qualitative method grounded in interpretive semiotics to identify analytical variables or categories in urban phenomena, specifically ethnic residential segregation, and to contrast them with variables employed in prior quantitative studies. The research is based on the epistemological premise that a semiotic-hermeneutic approach enables the identification of sociocultural dimensions that have not been sufficiently addressed within the dominant quantitative tradition in this field. Building on a review of the quantitative genesis of residential segregation studies and the application of an interpretive framework to urban text, context, and processes of meaning-making, the study develops a procedure oriented toward the analysis of meanings, practices, and symbolic configurations embedded in urban space. This process led to the construction of analytical categories comparable to variables previously consolidated in the specialized literature. The findings highlight the relevance of historical conflicts, religion, and forms of self-governance associated with crime as explanatory dimensions of ethnic residential segregation. These categories expand the prevailing socioeconomic emphasis by incorporating sociocultural content that deepens the understanding of the phenomenon. Overall, the article contributes a replicable methodological model that broadens the analytical framework of residential segregation and provides conceptual tools for the study of urban phenomena in Mexico and Latin America.
