Abstract

The Trombe Wall (TW) is a passive architectural strategy that utilizes solar radiation to enhance the thermal performance of buildings. However, most studies on this technology have focused on temperate climates. This study aims to analyze the impact of the presence and dimensions of openings in the inner layer of a PT on the thermal performance of a space, considering cold and hot periods in two Brazilian bioclimatic zones with mild climates: Juiz de Fora (ZB3) and Brasília (ZB4). The methodology was based on computer simulations performed using DesignBuilder software, comparing different PT configurations with a reference model that excluded the wall, in both winter and summer periods. The results indicated that the PT without openings increased the indoor air temperature in both climates, with less impact in the summer. The presence of openings, however, intensified the heating, with variations of up to 2.6 °C in Juiz de Fora and 2.9 °C in Brasília, due to convective action. However, changes in the dimensions of the openings did not have a significant influence, indicating that the existence of the openings is more decisive than their size.
